It has become an established tool in economics, psychology and political science, and more recently has been applied to disease control. Used to examine vaccination uptake in human medicine, game theory shows that when vaccination is voluntary some individuals will choose to "free-ride" on the protection provided by others, resulting in insufficient coverage for control of a vaccine-preventable disease. Here, we use game theory to examine farmer uptake of a new diagnostic ELISA test for sheep scab-a highly infectious disease with an estimated cost exceeding £8M per year to the UK industry. The stochastic game models decisions made by neighboring farmers when deciding whether to adopt the newly available test, which can detect subclinical infestation. A key element of the stochastic game framework is that it allows multiple states. Depending on infestation status and test adoption decisions in the previous p scab (and associated welfare implications) could be achieved in a cost-neutral way to the industry. Each of these organizations has its own policies and procedures for screening, evaluating, and instructing dogs and their owners/handlers, but little is currently known about the range of different practices that exist nationwide. The aim of this project was to survey a representative, national sample of U.S. therapy dog organizations to investigate commonalities and differences in the types of practices in current use and to compare these to recommendations in existing published guidelines. The findings suggest the need for further research, and highlight a number of areas relating to dog welfare, human safety, and infection control in which many organizations were inconsistent in their adherence to existing guidelines. Of particular concern with regard to animal welfare was the finding that approximately half of the organizations surveyed imposed no time limit on the length of visits. Also, given the potential for zoonotic disease transmission, the finding that only a small minority of organizations prohibit the feeding of raw meat diets and treats to visiting dogs is concerning. This information will help to raise awareness among facilities with therapy animal programs and assist in the development of future best practices within the therapy dog industry. We documented lesions and collected associated individual size class data and pathogen samples in Ozark Hellbenders of Arkansas (n = 73) from 2011 to 2014 with the following two objectives (1) document spatiotemporal patterns and severity of lesions present in this last remaining Arkansas Ozark Hellbender population, and (2) determine if host factors and infection status are associated with lesion severity. A scoring system was created from 0 to 7 based on lesion observations. Linear mixed model regressions followed by AICc model evaluation were used to determine associations among infection status for amphibian pathogens Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Ranavirus asthat may explain observed lesion distribution and that will be applicable to future disease and epidemiological investigations. Colonoscopy showed flat-elevated lesion with a central depression in the lower rectum (Fig.1a). Magnifying endoscopic findings with narrow-band imaging (M-NBI) in the right edge of the lesion showed that the vessel pattern is obscure because of white opaque substance (WOS)(Fig.1b). However, major pelvic surgery is not suitable for all patients and combined modality therapy (CMT) offers an alternative for patients who want to retain their bladder. Brachytherapy (BT) as part of CMT has been offered in selective cases of bladder cancer. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of BT for solitary urinary bladder tumours in terms of survival, local recurrence rates, and adverse events. METHODS A systematic review was conducted using defined search terms using online databases. Articles that discussed the use of BT as part of multi-modality treatments for MIBC were included. RESULTS Searches returned 112 articles of which 20 were deemed suitable for analysis. 15 of the 20 articles reported overall survival (OS) at 5 years 2747 patients were at risk and 1670 were alive after 5 years (60%) 7 studies reported OS at 10 years, with 817 patients at risk and 350 alive after 10 years (42%). Disease specific survival (DSS) at 5 years was reported in 4 studies 371 patients were at risk and 279 alive (75%) at 5 years. Local recurrence was reported across all 20 studies and ranged from 0-32%. CONCLUSION Brachytherapy as part of CMT for MIBC is not a standard technique. It is an effective treatment in experienced centres for a selected patient population who wish to preserve their bladder. In such patients, CMT-BT is well tolerated with an acceptable safety-profile.
